Campaign of the Month: December 2014
The First day of Arcanium
The wonders of Arcanium in Glantri, despite my short time in the area I have already heard many extraordinary things about the festival. It will surely prove to be a wonderful sight to see, I only hope that there are as many things for mundaners to do as there seems to be for the magical folk in Glantri.
The 24th rolls around and we gather in the Tower. The atmosphere outside is like a lightning bolt with people running all over the place, the canals are filled bustling with gondolas and the hotels have lines around the block. Inside the tower things are a little new as well, Luigi seems to have done a little decorating of his own in the place, adding some new very expensive looking art pieces. Even in my room was a large golden statue, I wonder if ever the constables will raid our house? What would we do with Luigi then? With as much as I have learned of him he would surely have a plan for that. Luckily we are very important to keeping him wealthy (I hope) and Thaljin is becoming too important for the constables to just raid his tower (I hope).
Luigi showed up as we knew he would, I suppose we are benefit from him almost as much as he uses us. He suggests that we visit the entertainers quarter first, sounds like a fun time. I know that the Monster Handler’s Guild has a demo set up that I don’t want to miss, and the Monster Hunter’s Guild will have a hunt, the details I have no idea about, so I’ll have to ask around. Luigi seems to know a bit about the hunt, he called it the sewer monster hunt, apparently they are letting a monster go in the canals and there is a prize to the one who catches it.
The next morning, the 25th and start of Arcanium, we get up, Luigi is ready to go out on his Gondola. He head out for the entertainer’s quarter, we hear that the Game Lizard’s shop will be putting on quite a show, and having many activities throughout the festival. It becomes clear, as we go there, that it is fortunate that Luigi is a master of navigating the canals. We pass the Water Tower Inn, it looks incredibly nice, but I am glad that we have a place to stay that we have already purchased.
The game wizard’s is a fantastic place, the owner was entertaining people as a transfigured lizard. I don’t imagine that being a lizard would be a pleasant experience and I don’t really want to find out. The Miltat form is not all that uncomfortable, but the process of changing is not one that I enjoy enduring. But this man seems to be fine with it, he just changed back into a human as we walk in, he greets us and introduces himself as Carlos. We have heard that there are books on the acquisition of treasure and manuals on various monsters in the world. He shows us to them and we engage in a little small talk. He brings a lad over who is carrying refreshments and we all take one. Some sort of jelly critters. He places a grape on one for me and the creature disolves it and its clear body turns purple. I eat it, or maybe drink it… I don’t know but it is quite tasty. However as I mulled it over in my mouth there was something hard and verymuch not jelly. I spit it out and there was a golden ring. I just about to ask what it was, when everyone started making a ruckus. Yelling that I had found the first golden ring. Carlos brought me over to a spinning wheel in the center of the building, and on the way I saw the banner advertising that there were 5 golden rings hidden in the building. I stepped up to the wheel and it slowly came to a stop, and with much shouting around me, I received the Ring of the Canals, a beautiful silver ring with blue opal fish and waves engraved into it. It is a magical ring that would aid me greatly in swimming. How fortuitous, I have never been one that is good at swimming and if we are to catch a monster in the canals, this may well come in handy.
After that excitement, we went back to looking at the books, Salhadin had spoken about interest in the fire plane since we had a portal to it and he has ambitions about mastering an elemental. So I found some manuals on the fire plane, perhaps these will help if we head there. I also found a book on gigantisism of creatures because a man said that he thought that the sewer monster was a gigantisized crocodile.
We had some business that we wanted to take care of, so we headed out to the open market. Luigi poled us past the Merchants Consortium, and the Tower-bridge Plaza, and the Headquarters for the Builders Conglomerate, each more impressive than the last. I hadn’t thought that these sights could have gotten more impressive, but everywhere in Glantri was decorated and shined up to be the best looking they could. Fireworks were going off, a treat I had only seen once in the capitol of Darokin.
The market was huge and had many people going around. I was able to sell my antique crown, I liked the thing, but I guess ancient karameikos relics don’t go well with current military ware. Thaljin and Elias also did some selling of goods. We were looking to buy some things, but many of the magic that is really going to help out in our endeavors is extremely expensive. I found a small bag of holding, and Thaljin advised me that the price was quite good, I would that Thaljin create some of the gear that I will use but being a viscount his time is now worth quite a lot.
As we shop we witnessed several thefts, we saw a crown fly up from a strong box as if of its own volition. We alerted the constable, but he couldn’t find the suspected invisible person until much later. Elias saw a man in a student’s robe that stole a scroll, we tried to follow, but once we got into the shop that said “Magic for Sale” we couldn’t find him. The shopkeep seem suspicious with the way that he was trying to get us to leave. While we were still looking around Thaljin noticed that the shopkeep was selling a nonmagical ring to a student who thought it was laden with a powerful spell. The shopkeep acted surprised when the ring wasn’t magical, and we questioned him a bit further, looking at his other goods to find if they were also fakes. The student thanked us, his name, Alanzo Vorteni a fifth year from the principality of Korenze. He thanked us and was very impressed with Thaljin.
After getting no where with the suspicious shopkeep we go back and find Luigi, and he takes us to get lunch at the Mage’s Hostelry. We eat well under the illusions and spells of the School of Magic. We decided that we need to go and get our licenses updated so that we don’t fall under legal fault for any actions we choose to take. It took us all afternoon to navigate through the Glantri bureaucracy, then Luigi showed us to the crystal dome on top of the Water Tower Inn, it was quite a fancy dinner.
The next morning Thaljin goes to listen a symposium on magic. Elias and I went out looking for the sewer monster, but to no avail.
