Campaign of the Month: December 2014

…Arcanium the greatest wizards event of the year in Glantri if not the world. To say I was excited about this event is an understatement. I wanted to see and experience everything. To think I came from a timeline where magic was shunned and hated and now here I was about to attend a grand four day festival where magic was the main attraction. This is where I belong. Arcanium this year was sponsored by the Prince of Blackhill, the Great School of Magic, and a shop called the Game Lizards. Luigi arrived at my estate on the morning of the first day of Arcanium. I offered him an elixir of hiding in exchange for his services as guide and gondola chauffeur. He gladly accepted promising to show us all the wonders Arcanium had to offer, especially the food, if we but had the coin to keep up. Which meant buying all his meals. Good old Luigi, a good friend but one who is not afraid to spend your money for you.
Our first stop was the Game Lizards shop, one of the sponsors of the event this year. I had not been in this shop before and it turned out to be quite an experience. We entered to see a large brown lizard doing tricks entertaining a group of children and parents. At the finale of its routine the lizard lept into the air and changed form into Carlos the charismatic owner of the Game Lizards shop. The children cheered enthusiastically. Even I was impressed with his showmanship. The shop was filled with children, parents and wizards of all ages and social class. There were staff walking around with trays of drinks and treats. One approached us with a tray of gelatinous cube shots. I gave one a try and to my surprise it was actually made from a bit of gelatinous cube that had been flavored. I had not expected that, thought it was quite tasty. Hakim also gave one a try and to his surprise found a gold ring inside his. This caused a great commotion throughout the shop and we quickly learned he had found one of the five gold prize rings which gave him a spin on the wheel of prizes. Hakim spun the wheel and won a magical silver ring of swimming. He was grinning from ear to ear as he showed off his prize to the rest of us. Elias began eating and drinking everything offered in hopes of finding his own prize ring. Eventually he found one in a refreshing honey liquorice drink but it turned out to be one of the five rings of gaff, which promptly exploded into a cloud of gaff and fanfare to the delightment of all the children present. The Game Lizards shop also had an extensive selection of books for sale on various topics including a nine volume set on Dragon Hunting and the Acquisition of Treasure which I bought with an Arcanium day coupon.
Our next stop was the open market where all things arcane were being bought and sold. The market was packed with stalls and booths selling wares and wizards buying and selling all sorts of things. Constables were out in abundance to insure safety and deter thievery. I had some items to sell so I found a booth where I sold a few scrolls, Tritamisg’s dark copper slats, and a crystal ball for which I did not have the funds to enchant. I also showed the merchant our ethereal pearls. As we began haggling over price a wizard wearing blue robes with stars and carrying a magically twisted cane with a silver knob stepped up and made an offer on the pearls. His name was Elvonous and he had a strong Thyatian accent. After a few minutes of haggling we settled on a price of 190 crowns and concluded our transaction. We next spent some time shopping. I was looking for headbands of intellect while Elias inquired about rings of haste. We had little success and eventually wandered into a building with a sign “Magic for Sale” posted outside. This was a permanent building though the environment and the wares offered seemed more questionable than any of the stalls and booths we visited outside. It looked to be where students from the GSM did their shopping as there were a number of students present. We looked around but did not find anything of interest. As I turned to leave I noticed a young student getting ready to purchase a magic ring. On a whim I concentrated on the ring to perceive its magical aura and found it had none. I quickly interceded on his behalf suggesting he use his ability to detect magic before making a purchase. He graciously thanked me, introducing himself as Alanzo Vertinie from the Principality of Caurenze and current student at the Great School of Magic. I talked with him for a few moments and found out his father is a chief architect in Caurenze. A principality reputed to have the finest engineers in the realms. Alanzo promised to write me a letter of recommendation to his father should I have need of an architect.
We ate lunch at the Mage’s Hostelry. I enjoyed a flying boar’s sandwich a good wine and a mandragora liquor. Unfortunately the afternoon was spent updating my licenses. A tedious but necessary annual event in Glantri for a wizard to stay in good standing. For dinner Luigi suggested we eat at the Water Tower Inn up in the exclusive crystal dome, where we enjoyed watching a dazzling fireworks display while eating troll steaks and smoking fine cigars. A magnificent end to the first day of Arcanium…△
