Campaign of the Month: December 2014
camaraus journal 13
On the morning of the 19th, we are calmed down now that the battle has been won and the dragon no longer a pressing concern. I am glad that we did not fight it, and that David did not do anything foolish. For myself though, despite my usual patience, I had almost lashed out at the beast. I suppose arrogance is something that vexes me.
We decide to go and talk to the Queen again, see how Lady Illyana’s condition is coming. Its odd that I have taken to calling her a Queen, its an easier title than others, but I put no stock in it. Now I doubt any would follow her, as she is again raving when we enter her chamber.
She yells at us about the sword, whining and accusing. Our words have no effect upon her, so Sergei attempts to remove any spell or magic with his own. But her affliction is wither too powerful for Sergei, or it is, as I suspect, more of a natural affliction of the mind. Having been in such close contact with an apparently powerful relic, she has been left unstable.
We speak to Crogbrak and his lieutenant about Ilyana, he goes with us to see her again. He is equally unsuccessful with reason, so he takes up his holy symbols and his sacred tokens. He rattles some charms and shakes his staff. I wonder about his spell until we hear a pop. Much to our surprise, the noise doesn’t come from Crogbrak or the queen, but from the side we see a hole warping the side of the chamber.
Two ragged looking humans and a tall cloaked figure with a disturbing face covered in red and black step out towards us. From this portal they come, and they are calling the tall one master. He has clawed hands and glowing red eyes. While the humans turn to us, their skin starts to stretch and their bodies warp. Fur pricks through their skin as the were-creatures reveal their monstrous shape. The leader walks over and with some unseen force lifts Illyana from her makeshift throne. He tells her that she has failed the master. Ridicules her as he brings her back to the portal.
I give the wereblade to Octavius so that he may dispose of these unnatural beasts. David tries to stop the robed leader, but his blows are all turned aside. As the robed spellcaster takes Illyana and throws her towards this portal, David leaps into the way to block her path. Stalling her movement, Sergei has time to cast a spell to bar her from magical transportation.
It is not enough though, the dark one says a word and a frightful force shocks through us, he brakes Sergei’s conjuration and slips away from us with our Lady. Without their master, we make short work of the lycanthropes. However, Octavius is bitten by one of them and I can sense their foul curse taking root, we have little time to help him.
We turn to Crogbrak, luckily unharmed. It is disturbing that these dark ones could come here now. Crogbrak tells us that this must have been the one spoken of in whispers and rumors. He is the Shaidar haran, of the Dark Brotherhood. He is worried about the queen, he thinks that she must of been possessed, for she was saying such things as calling the dark one master. Or perhaps she was referring to his master, and equally disturbing notion.
The next day, I go out and find wolfsbane in the surrounding forest. With this we are able to cure Octavius of his affliction before it becomes true lycanthropy. We were lucky this time. As his fever dies, we know that he shall live on to fight for the side of good.
We make our way to Specularuam, passing through Penhelegon and past Kelvin. We do not parley with Lord Penhelegon. We spend the night of the 22nd camped well outside of Kelvin’s walls. We do not yet know what will come of our fight with the red company. Surely their ranks and their honor lie in shambles, but that is all the more reason for them to hate us.
On the 24th we make it back to Specularuam. It is a welcome sight after these past days away. We say good bye to Ell as he wishes to return to the Slyther Wyr and the sea. He settles his accounts with Sergei and tells us that if ever we have need of the fastest ship on the sea, we can come find him.
We talk to Lindsay in the mage’s guild and they have finished out creations. I receive an enchanted longbow of great power, it is a princely gift. And Lindsay has made for us lanterns that need not be lit, and whose illusions never go out.
Finally Sergei takes us and goes to his church. We talk to Alexius, who greets his brother in cloth, Bishop Sergei. They send Sergei in to speak with Patriarch Alekseyev, it seems Sergei had been summoned. When Sergei returns he tells us that Bishop Omner had been given the evil book, and before they could do anything with it, he fled the hall with it. Omner did leave Sergei a letter. It tells us that the bishop had been struggling with something ever since he got the book, he can’t say by some short of magical compulsion we suspect. He has a cursed mark that burns, which reminds David and Sergei of the curse inflicted upon them by Mordez. He eventaully say that he must do as the master says, so we know that there is some dark enchantment here. Lastly he asks us to find him, he says he will flee back in time to a place forgotten, where the temple of Petra resides.
Sergei seems very disturbed after his meeting. What ever else was said it cannot be good. Hopefully we find Omner before he is slain or turned to undead, and hopefully he will still be in possession of this cursed book. It has been our bane for too long now.
