Some excerpts from the Journal of Salhadin
“… Indeed it was unexpected that my old friend Thaljun should return in the form of a human. I watched over him for 2 days, as he seemed to struggle on the brink of death. Something terrible must have met them in those woods. At long last, he awoken and recounted to me the tail of Lord Agon’s keep. How unfortunate that so many had fallen! I immediately offered my aid to my good friend, in any way that I could. I also offered the aid of my trainee’s, not fully remembering that they are not yet up to such a challenge. Thaljun accepted, and also gifted to me a powerful magical bow, that unexpected blasted a hole in my quarters with some sort of light beam it produced. Before we began to prepare, I brought Thaljun to a meeting with my soldiers who were going to give me a daily report of events.
At the meeting a ranger came, in attendance with one of my guards. I immediately suspected him as a spy, but alas! I did nothing to prevent him from accomplishing my mission; I did not even try to hide the identity of my friend, for whom the Barony was searching feverishly. In hindsight, I brought about the deaths of at least 15 people in Luln due to my indecision to act against this spy. Somehow I will need to make restitution to the city for my foolishness. My guards reported nothing unexpected- the Barony was out in force looking for Thaljun. Fortunately their men were, for the most part, not harming the citizens. After the brief meeting it was time to prepare.
I asked Lady Sasha’s leave to accompany Thaljun on his mission. She consented, and Thaljun gave her a hefty gift of armor and weaponry. At this point we were just about to leave when the alarm bell rang; a hydra had been spotted approaching the city! Thaljun immediately began to cast spells upon us, that we might be a match for this beast. I still do not understand how the Hydra arrived at the walls within only 30 seconds of being spotted, as though some divine providence willed the creature to move at some heinous speed that we might be caught off guard. Its arrival came before Thaljun finished casting his spells, and we had to leap into action. Our first plan was to lead the Hydra away from the city, but when it unexpectedly materialized at the walls, despite the vigilant watch of the guards, we made a hasty change. Thaljun and I are both confident in our abilities, but in this case it was over confidence. We engaged the Hydra, trying all things we could to slay it, but it regenerated much too quickly. Several of my soldiers and town guard died trying to aid me against the creature. Despite our efforts, we could not find its weakness. In the sky 2 black figures circled, and one began to strafe the city with acid- black dragons! Thaljun had in his arsenal a spell that could daze the Hydra, allowing us to mount our horses and ride past the Hydra without provoking any attacks from its now 10 heads! The Hydra disengaged the city once it came around, and began to follow us- if only we had stuck with our original plan than many less defenders would have fallen, but as I said- over confidence led to such a mistake.
As we quitted the city with all haste, the one of the Dragons engaged us, swooping down and attacking with his tail. At such close proximity we could recognize this dragon as Lord Agon, the 3 limb dragon. My rubied blade is the reason he has only 3 limbs, but I am sure that antagonized him all the more against us. He score a mighty hit against my horse and I with his tail, and I was forcibly dismounted. Thaljun and I knew we could not make it to the forest in such a way. Not far off was a large grove of trees that would offer some small, temporary cover. We made for the grove, but not without getting spouted with acid. I arrived first, having been enchanted with a Haste potion. Unfortunately, Thaljun was unable to make it before Lord Agon landed between him and the grove of trees. The Dragon attempted to swallow Thaljun, but ended up just biting him. It was at this time that I mustered all courage in order to save my comrade- I sprinted forward, slashing at the beasts hind leg, and reminded it that this sword robbed him of a hand. In fury he turned towards me, giving Thaljun an opportunity to make the grove. Thanks to my enhanced speed, I was able to break off and join him. It was at this point that the other Dragon descended. Thaljun clearly recognized it, because on his lips he muttered a name I cannot rightly repeat. Apparently he was responsible for slaying her brood. No wonder they hate us so much! The two dragons began to vaporize the grove with blasts of acid. It seemed like the end, but one shining idea entered my mine has Thaljun mentioned that all he had was one gaseous form potion. I told him to let me climb into his hole, and then for him to drink the potion and we would both float away. It was not a moment too soon that I mentioned the idea, because I was overcome with the most unbelievable fear that paralyzed me at the sight of the second dragon. Regardless, the plan worked! We escaped death by the strand of hair, much to the dismay of the Dragons. We hid all night, and the following day we rode non-stop to Specularum. There events unfolded as though I were in a haze or a dream. All I remember is Thaljun being chased by a bunch of clerics, and then we ended up on a boat. The boat was heading for a place called the Hinterlands, a place I had never heard of. I do not think that this is what Thaljun had in mind for us, but so it is where fate now takes us. Perhaps there we will find the strength to slay these dragons that so ferociously attacked us.
