Camarau's Journal 5
Under Penhelagan Estate Part II
After searching the chests and discussing our suspicions of the man who sent us down here, we head out to explore more of the dungeon. There is an icebox room, and a set of stairs down. We go down and find a room full of coal. I find a secret door and with a knock spell from the physician we open it. A trap goes off and ignites all of the coal dust. I quickly quench the flames with a spell, but I feel a deeper cut into my soul as I again feel the loss of my animal friend.
The bad luck does not end as the physician reads a scroll in the next hall which gives me another burning hit. After a quick touch up to aid my burned flesh we elect to carry on. There are a few more secret doors seeming to lead to the same place. This wizard was either paranoid or had a love for creating traps, and I seem to have fallen into all of them. We hear some noises of breaking objects in the room, but wait a bit to gather ourselves by both doors.
The room is a library with all sorts of books and items, the books are burning and there is an imp in the middle of the room who has just smashed some orb. David and I chase the imp, trying to catch him while the others put out the fire. We chased it through several doors, until we found it in a room that looks like a laboratory. I see some objects in the lab that may be worth saving as the imp goes about smashing every alchemical concoction into every other one. I run in and grab a small tray of potions, David goes for a book and a pair of gloves, but doesn’t make it out completely before the room blows up. He gets knocked forward and much of his equipment is badly burned.
Back in the library they have saved some things including orbs with elementals of water, air and earth. We assume these are what we need to take back to the seer. Here we get into an argument. The physician wants to go back to the seer now with the orbs we have. The rest of us eventually decide that we want to try and fix the orb that the imp broke, and attempt to finish the wizard’s work. The physician agrees to follow the party’s will. We rest so that the clerics can ask for the magic that could possibly restore the orb.
We wake and Sergei restores the orb and it seems that it will be able to perform as it was intended. We go into the unopened room expecting to find the way to a fire elemental, but a rust monster jumps out destroying David’s armor, something that he was rather fond of I remember. We bypass the rust beast, and see the room is a holding cell for beasts and magical creatures.
In the next room, there is a suit that looks to be protective. It is getting hotter here, and we suspect the elemental we seek is in the next room. David dons the suit, and we open the door. There is a huge room, I feel the heat blast against me even in the middle of the next room over. A massive column of fire is in the center, it turns towards us and I can feel the anger as well as the heat pouring off the creature. It is kept within a magical circle with dimensional anchoring stones around it. David goes fourth.
Inside the room is a contraption that the orb fits it. We start summoning water elementals into the area to weaken the creature. After a while of watching David stuggle with the contraption, his suit burning, I remember that some of the potions I had gotten from the lab looked to be of cold magic. We throw those potions in and large blocks of ice appear, and the elemental weakens further allowing david to finish capturing it.
I really don’t like this wizard now. He had a devil as a familiar. He puts traps in every corner. He leaves dangerous things around. He enslaves the natural elements and brings them to this plane where they do not belong, this is different than calling on their aid for a brief time. Of course we had to continue his work to help the seer, perhaps I need to find a new line of work. I should find a grove somewhere and work on rectifying some of the killing and damage I have caused. But there is time enough for that for an elf, the work I do now is in general good for the balance I believe.
Anyways, we go back up to the manor. We go to Penheligon and tell him of what was down there. He asks for the items promised, and David gives him the sword. The physician, however, doesn’t hand over the tiara, he asks Lord Karen about it and his intentions. The lord refuses to say, and becomes quite insulted. I push the matter as well, trying to have a softer tone and tell him we are just curious. But Onagisthyriad pushes further and demands that he be told what Karen’s intentions are. We end up waiting outside for the constables, and give the tiara to them. David is probably the most upset by this. I agreed with the physician’s curiosity but I was not prepared to go as far as he did, with clearly no legal right to it. But it was done and we set out.
David and Sergei set out to the seer, Eil and I went to Kelvin.
