Camarau's Journal 6
Assault on the keep.
We meet in Kelvin. The seer answered our party’s questions. It seems that the relics of Halav are actively being obscured by some power. The perhaps closet dragon is Yaerghosianakk, a green worm that lives in the Dymrak forest. I would like to investigate, if for no other reason than to see the Vyalli elves. I do some work at the local Church of Karameikos temple, healing the sick as my powers let me. Eil went out and purchased some goods to sell in Specularum. I take the book of evil that the party acquired but when I do I feel a horrid sickening. I know that some things of great evil will harm people of good that try to posses them, so this supports my thoughts of destroying the book. I give it to David who seems less effected.
We get on our wagon and set out to Specularum. On the road we meet a lone traveler. It is a woman and Eil invites her to our campfire. Her name is Lindsay Archeros, she is a newly practicing spellcaster and she is going to Specularum to study with the Magician’s Guild there. I let her look at the book we got out of the Penhaligon wizard’s laboratory, that has many alchemical potion recipes. She is engrossed.
The next day we come across an injured man in the road. The situation looks familiar, and soon poorly armed bandits come out. We try to not kill them. I threaten them with a bolt of lightning but they attack anyways and I turn the power of nature against them. Sergei holds out for a while calling on the men to stop their attack, but they do not stop. They seem crazed and we don’t have the power to stop them all without injury. Then a spellcaster of some sort comes out and demands the book. Lindsay wonders if he is taking of the alchemy book, but we know he has come for the mysterious book of evil. We finish slaying or disabling the bandits, and turn our focus towards the new threat. I attack him first calling a bolt of lightning from the sky, but it runs right through him, striking the ground. As more of us attack him, it seems that he has some sort of power or item that reflects our spells away from him. He is quite prepared, Gimbol and I can scarcely do anything against him.
He lashes out with lightning attacks, (that must be why my spell did so little). ONe of the attacks crashes around me and I can do little against it, I fling myself out of the way of most of it, it is as though some sort of greater power aided me. I lie on the ground, but I’m able to heal myself some and get up. Our party decides there is another way to fight the man. As he goes to take the book from David, the worriers pile on and try to hold the man down. Eventually he snatches at the book and uses a spell to get away. But it look, Eil is gone with him, while David lies with the book. I quickly pick up my injured body and grow my wings. I call upon the spirits of birds and take their shape. Sergei takes off on a horse one way, magically looking for Eil. I take flight and go another way, searching with the eyes of a hawk. When we arrive finally, Eil is laying there unconscious but alive. He tells us how he had the caster, but couldn’t choke him before the caster shocked him and ran.
We gathered our things and looked to the man in the road. He said something and we heard the name Penhaligon. We take him to Specularum.
In the city we go first to the Magician’s Guild. We drop off Lindsay asking her to keep our alchemy book and kit safe while she studies, and we will see if she can help us later. We give the spell books to the Magician’s Guild and they offer to enchant some things for us. I ask for an improvement to my bow, and order a high quality one to be sent to them.
We go to the injured man, Jebediah, and he tells us that Lord Penhaligon is dying and needs to get a message to Lord Karen. We take his message and after some business in Specularum we head back to the north. Sergei is interested in the beast men that are rumored to be around Kelvin, so we stop there and ask about them. With little to go on we decide to go to the north and see if we get attacked. We don’t get attacked, but once in town, David finds out that the lord Karen used the diamond Tiara to propose to the lady daughter of Kelvin. The nobles are going to Kelvin. Worrying for his safety, we go to see the lord we had so upset.
We get to his manor, and the butler greets us. That uppity snob, some sort of city thing to think that their money gives them majesty over others. But he lets us in and we gain audience with Lord Karen and Patriarch Sherlane. Our message concerns the bandit Queen, and they take it very seriously. Illiana the perhaps daughter of Lord Penhaligon (not Kavorkien the late wizard), is the bandit queen and she hates everyone or something. It was all politics, I tried and memorize it but these things just don’t interest me. What did interest me was that this queen was now going to kill us. I guess Mr. Snob butler was a spy (or maybe someone else) and had it in for us. The patriarch suggests we go deal with the queen.
We head north to the keep, and after some brief planning begin our assault at midnight. We decide that if we can guess where the queen is we can kill her and run. But as we break in the alarm is sounded. The first building we enter is not that of the queen, but a small barracks. We slay some men, and gather around the entrance waiting. But how long will we wait. We watch as creatures get organized and atart to surround us. It looks like we have gotten ourselves into quite a corner. But I know a few things that could get us an edge.
